Check out some pictures of Dave Fry and Autowerks' weekend at Mosport in the Race Gallery

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave Fry Reports his take on the weekend:

Well, after a season full of lots of GOOD luck, the BAD luck gremlins found us this weekend, causing us problems every day except Sunday.

Synopsis:

Weds - new axles for the car were held up in customs, and it was raining anyway, so I drove the Panamera a few laps on the track and packed it in.

Thurs - Courtney put the old axles back in the car so we could run for the day. Green track because of the rain on Weds taking all the rubber off. Nobody doing really fast times, but we are right there at the top. All going good until 4pm. Turn 5 (Moss Corner). 5th gear in, downshift, downshift, downshift into 2nd. The 3rd downshift might have been too soon and something breaks. Big sound like a bunch of nuts and bolts in a blender. Car coasts to a stop. No forward drive in any gear. The session keeps going, so I have to get out of the car and walk back to the pits. Nice 20 min walk through the bush!

We get the car back and hope that it's the axles, b/c we now have the spares. After about 90 mins of disassembly, Courtney finds that the differential housing in the gearbox has completely sheared off. Problem now is that there are only two people in North America that know how to fix these gearboxes - one in Cincinnati, the other in California. So Courtney decides that he and Brian are going on a roadtrip to Cinci! They pack up the gearbox and head out that night, arriving in Cinci at 730am Friday.

Friday - Courtney and Brian meet the gearbox guy at his shop outside Cinci at 730 and are back on the road at 9am. They arrive back at Mosport at 8pm. 3 1/2 hrs work on the car putting the gerabox back in, as well as the new axles. At 1130, they notice a leak in the front center radiator.

Saturday - We find another, used radiator with one of the other teams, and quickly get it in the car for the warmup before qualifying. On the outlap, warning lights flashing everywhere. Come into Turn 8, the hardest breaking area on the track, and the car is almost sideways under breaking at 200k! Something aint right! Drive by the front straight and Courtney tells me there's something leaking out the back of the car. So I immediately pull over and off the track to avoid covering the track with whatever is coming out of the car. We get the car towed in and realize that all the coolant/water is gone from the car. Thankfully, it's just a hoseclamp that is a quickfix.

So, on to qualifying, and we've had no laps since Thurs! We get to the grid late and all the cars are already out, so I just get out and go as fast as I can. We manage a 1.2430 (my best time ever!), good enough for 2nd in class and 5th overall.

We are late to the grid and lose our grid spot, and they put us last on the grid for the race! First lap is a warmup lap, behind the pacecar, get the tires warmed up. Through turn 5, on to the back straight with some speed, and the hood flies up and smashes the windshield! I pull off the track and see if I can get the hood down to drive back to the pits.

So, I get it back to the trailer. Smashed windshield and a bent hood. We're done for the day.

Sorry to everyone that came to watch. At least we had a good lunch!

But, we aint done for the weekend yet!

Courtney sources a new windshield from Downtown Porsche and we have an extra hood back at the shop. We have an installer come in from Bowmanville, and its back to race ready at 8pm Sat night.

Sunday - need to get out in the warmup and get a few laps in before the 90 min race. Manage a low 1.25, for fastest in the warmup.

The grid for the Enduro is set from the fastest lap of the 2nd sprint race from Sat. Because I didn't race, I start the race from last (25th?). But it's a long race and anything can happen?

Good start, passing 3 cars into the first turn. We get a yellow flag a couple of laps in, which backs up the field and I'm in 10th by now. We go green and I get stuck behind 2 slower GTC4 cars (my class). After 5 laps of not being able to get by them, I come into the pits, early, at 30 mins. Picture perfect pitstop and we're in and out at 5 mins, 1 second! Great job team! I come back out into open track and put down 30 mins of fast laps, including some 1.24 laps! Gradually make up time and spaces and am in 3rd place overall, 2nd in class with 20 mins to go! 20 seconds behind the leaders. Randy Oswald, who is leading overall, and also in my class, has to make an unscheduled pitstop and change a corded tire. This drops him to 3rd, and moves me to 2nd overall and first in class! I'm about 12 seconds ahead with 15 mins to go and just keeping asking Courtney on the radio how much time between us. He closes the gap to 10 seconds as MY front tires are also starting to go, but that's all he can do.

So, we end up 2nd overall, and first in class! Our 2nd win of the year!

What an amazing team effort and a great end to the weekend that had up till then, been filled with such bad luck.

Thank-you for those that came out to watch and support me on the weekend. From what I hear, it was quite a race to watch!

Enduro

The rain arrived as promised, although by the time we arrived at the track by 1030, it had settled to a light mist.

Warm-up scheduled for 12 noon. Debating on whether to use rain tires (grooved) or slicks. In the end, we go with the rains.

Good choice. Passed 5 people at the first turn! Drizzle coming down and it seems most cars are on slicks, so I'm much faster on the rains.

Come in after about 7 laps to check the tires (temps and pressure). Both look good.

Not much time between the warm-up and the race, so only have a chance to have a quick drink of water, get some last minute tips from Spencer, and figure out which tires to start the race with. We spend a few mins looking at the weather radar and decide to go with the rains.

This seems to be the right choice as at the start I blow past the 600+hp 187 car into the lead and build up a gap of about half a lap after 5 laps! Unfortunately, it starts to dry up and the rain tires get slower while those on slicks start to get faster. Time to change tires, but I have to wait for 20 mins into the race to make my mandatory 5 min pitstop. By this time, 2 cars get by me and I'm in third overall. We change the tires, gas the car, but have some trouble with the belts and my 5 min pitstop ends up being 6 mins.

One other thing to note is that my cool shirt wasn't working, the radio wasn't working, I didn't have any water in the car, and the windows were in and making the car incredibly hot!

So, we go back out on scrubbed slicks and imediately pick up speed and start to regain some of the lost time. A car crashes on the front straight and double yellow flags slow everyone down while emergency vehicles get on track to help. Eventually, I catch up to the field and pick up most of the lost time from the pitstop. Car gets taken away (hopefully driver is ok) and we go green with 20 mins to go till the end. I know its 20 mins to go cuz Spencer puts the board over the wall as I drive by the front straight (no radio)! So, this for me looks like a 20 min sprint race and I drive as hard as I can to catch the leaders. A 10 second deficit turns into only a few seconds 15 mins in as I drive the car the fastest I have all race to try to catch up. I can see the leader now, only a few seconds in front of me.

Unfortunately, the checkered flag is dropped on the next lap, and I finish 2.3 seconds behind the leader, for 2nd overall, and 2nd in class. What a race!

I end up doing a 1.29 flat for the fastest lap of the race of anyone.

Great result for Team Autowerks!

All in all, a great weekend for our first time at Road Atlanta. A great result for all the canadians too, including Randy, Bob Seitz, and Shaun McKaigue, all whom took home podiums in all their races!

Courtney and Brian did an awesome job with the car all weekend. Thank-you!

Next stop, Watkins Glen in May!

Race 2

Another great race!

Start was after 2 parade laps as the starter didn't like the look of the the grid when we went by first time. Gave me another lap to warm up the tires and the fans another lap to look at the beautiful white Panamera 4S pace car!

Good start, didn't gain or lose any position. First 5 laps are a dogfight with 4 GTC4 cars all nose-to-tail and keeping up with the faster GTA cars! One car gets by me at Turn 12, and then the next lap Randy passes me at Turn 1. But we're all still nose to tail. This lasts until a few laps later when a fast-in-the-straights but slow-in-the-corners GT1R splits the group. I'm still in 4th and can't get by this car for about a lap, and this costs me about 5-6 seconds against the first 3 cars in my class by the time I get by. 2 laps to go, the leader in our class spins off at turn 6 and the next 3 of us get by before he can recover. 2 laps to go and Randy is in the lead! The next car is right all over Randy to try to pass, but Randy holds him off, winning the race. I finish a few seconds back. 3rd in class and 5th overall. 1.2822 best lap. Congrats to Randy for his first PCA win!

90 min Enduro race tomorrow. Maybe in the rain!

Southern Style BBQ tonight. Yum, yum!

What a race!

Started 9th on the grid, beside Randy. Got a good start, passing him and another car into turn one. Kept the pace up for the race but couldn't catch the race leader, or class leader, Chris Brown. Lots of lapped traffic where Randy caught up to me after dicing with the 38 car. Randy and I beside eachother again through lapped traffic on the front straight. Randy gets blocked and I get through put some space between us as the lapped car slows him further. 10th lap I locked the front wheels into Turn 10 after the long straight. Flat spotted the front left (we later found out it was corded). Huge front vibration starts and I'm yelling on the radio to Courtney "How many laps left??". Manage to keep enough distance from Randy, although he does close in towards the checker.

Finished 7th overall, and 2nd in class. 1.285 best! And still more work to do. Randy right behind me with almost an identical fast lap. We'll be beside eachother again on the grid for Race 2!

Stay tuned....should be fun!

Qualifying

Qualifying. With the cold weather, the plan was to go out on the out lap very cautiously to scrub in the slick tires for a lap or 2 and then go hard after. Trick being you need to keep the slower cars behind you given that its immediately green.

That strategy worked and we got a 1.295 as our first flying lap. Unfortunately, a combination of traffic and a slow puncture in the rear left meant that that lap was our fastest. I came in after about 6 laps as the times were not getting better, and we were using up the tires we'd need for the race.

Good thing I did given the puncture, which was causing the tire to lose pressure rapidly. I'd hate to think if I'd continued for another 3 laps and that tire exploded down the back straight at 160 mph!

So, not the best time, but we've lived to tell the tale and we can now make it up in the race.

Gridded 9th overall and 4th in class, beside Randy, who's car continues to be plagued with break issues that are difficult to pinpoint.

We've got some work to do, but we're looking forward to it.

Race time 12.55 EST.

Update - Practice 3 we managed slightly better to a 1.2922, but still need to work on the same areas of Turns 3-7 as I'm fast everywhere else.

Practice 4 is where you do 3 "practice" race rolling starts and then do a 7 lap fun race. These are usually lotsa fun. I start 3rd on the grid and 1st in class and end up 4th overall and 2nd in class with a similar time of 1.293. Tires were shot though and I didn't push as hard as I could have.

Think we can find a second and a half tomorrow with sticker tires in qualifying. Hopefully!

Tomorrow's schedule is for a Qualifying and 2-30 min Sprint races. We will go out and qualify with sticker tires and hopefully get our time in during the first 5 laps to save the tires for the races.

Talk more tomorrow!

Practice 1 we didn't manage a lot of track time due to a black flag incident where a 997 Grand Am car slammed into the wall at Turn 12, and left pieces all down the front straight. I was about 3 second behind him and had to avoid a rolling wheel coming at me as I went down the straight! Driver is ok, but the car is a writeoff. Managed a 1.31, good enough for 5th overall, and 2nd in class. Spencer was driving Randy's car and did a 1.27 again, first overall and in class!

Practice 2 more black flags but I found a couple of clean laps without traffic after we restarted after another black flag. Incident involving 2 cars at, you guessed it, Turn 12! Remember I mentioned the similarities to Turn 2 at Mosport. Best time was 1.293, good enough for 3rd overall, and first in class!

Day 1 Summary

Day 1

Arrived this morning to the historic and much vaunted, Road Atlanta. 2nd scariest track in NA they say, behind Mosport!

As usual, we are using TRG for pro coaching and data review, and also their great hospitality. Spencer Pumpelly will be doing the coaching, someone I've used at Watkins Glen, Road America, Daytona and Sebring thus far. This strategy has proven very successful given the pole position we got at Road America last year for the Enduro race (at our first time there!), and recently at Sebring two 2nd place finishes, again our first time at the track!

So, another new track and another new challenge for us. I've watched probably 100 laps of Youtube video of Road Atlanta as preparation, but it only helps your brain recognize the track the first time you're out; the rest of your body has to react and its all new.

First session of 30 mins we spent just having me making sure I had the car pointed in the right direction. Best lap time was a 1.38 vs our weekend target of 1.26, the class record. Car felt good. What a track! Video does it no justice, similar to Mosport. Couple of scary, cheek-clenching turns, in particular the blind uphill and turn down to turn 12. This has just about everything to scare the +@:# out of you: flat out blind turning, followed by a light lift into a fast right hander.

Great place to start slow and work my way up, and no doubt, one of the places that will separate the men from the boys by the end of the weekend. Think of a combo of turns 2 and 4 at Mosport.

Otherwise, turn 1-2 is the only other "scary" place, with a blind uphill turn into apex before a downhill right hand turn 3. Just takes a bit of seat-time to work out visual markers and then gradually work up the speed. Turn one you can brake later and turn in earlier carrying a lot of speed b/c of the uphill compression following the turn. Its a lot of fun.

Second session we got down into the 1.33s, although I managed to spin it going through turn 3 after trying to brake way later and then turning in with too much speed. One full rotation, but no issues. Started up and get going. May have created a small flatspot on the fronts, which starts to create a little vibration at speed. Nothing major though.

3rd session was raining and we decide not to go out.

4th session I have Spencer go out in the car first to lay down some data that I can use as a benchmark to chase the rest of the weekend. He obliges with a 1.27 flat! I take the car back out about halfway into the session and manage a 1.31 before it starts raining again.

5th session is rained out and we're done for the day.

Spencer and I talk after and he tells me how much he loves the setup on the car and how much he likes driving it (thank-you Courtney!).

All in all, not a bad start to the weekend. We looked at the data when we got back and the bulk of the time I need to make is actually in the slower sections, not the faster sections - that's my Mosport training coming back!

Quick shower and then we're out for a steak and a glass of red.

Talk tomorrow!
